Levi had finished some of the leftovers that Bella had made the other day, which were getting increasingly more edible as time went on, and glanced at his watch. Bella would probably be home in a bit. While he didn't say anything to her, he did consider it their home now since she spent so much time there. Or maybe it was just because he wanted her to consider it hers too. Sometimes he felt he still had to dance around some things with her, but no more so than he imagined you would in any committed relationship.

Earlier he had been planning to go out with her, maybe some dancing, but he had a headache that was killing him and being around a lot of people would only make it worse. He'd taken as many pain pills as he dared but he'd interrogated a suspect earlier and had been forced to use his ability to get information, which always taxed him.

Since he was feeling no pain though, at least other than his headache, maybe it was best if they took advantage of that. He knew that the sex was best for Bella when he was as physical as possible and sometimes his human limitations got in the way of that. With the pain pills though, he'd be able to go harder, at least tonight. He'd feel it tomorrow but it would be worth it.

Smiling, he decided that's what he'd do. A night in. It sounded perfect.

The first thing she noticed was the scent. She knew every animal type in this forest. Knew them, had consumed most of them.

This one was different. It wasn't animal. It wasn't human. But it was in her forest and she was by God going to find it.

With a burst of speed, she followed the scent at her normal speed, the trees blurring past her as she ran.

Levi was pretty sure everything was perfect. He was also pretty sure that everything didn't have to be perfect. Finally, he was pretty sure perfection was easy when your plan was so simple. The simplicity of it was what he liked though, because it meant he didn't have to do a lot to have a good time with Bella. This was about as simple as it got.

Sweatpants and a tanktop were his outfit of choice. There was no meal to cook or wine to open. Nothing at all like that. So when 7 o'clock rolled around, Levi just opened his door.

The Ball itself hadn't started out as anything so grand as it was now. The first was more like a few drinks raised at the end of a hard-fought battle; the first attendees too exhausted, mentally and physically, to do more than drain a few barrels of whiskey and stumble home.

The year following - the first anniversary of their triumph. Now that one had been a party, or so she'd read in her ancestor's journals. After that, the party had become tradition and had grown as the town did until it became what it was today.

A full formal, catered ball that took up two ballrooms in the biggest hotel in downtown.

The magic that ran the town ran the ball as well, so all Maggie was left to do was supervise, twitch a spell here and there if something went awry, and enjoy watching the residents enjoy themselves.

Maggie plucked a glass of champagne from a passing waiter and sipped at it as she walked (barefoot, of course), proud of the town it was her responsibility to care for, no matter how it had wronged her from the start.

One of the things Levi didn't like about not having a partner was that sometimes it would really be nice to have some backup. His latest ex-partner, the were-yak, hadn't worked out so well, constantly having to stop and eat grass and all the time. Maybe it wasn't so bad, because he had really, really smelled bad.

Right now, he was wandering around some sort of creepy, empty warehouse in the middle of night with no backup, hunting down what likely was a really sick and twisted serial killer. He'd been tracking whoever it was for months now. Dead bodies torn apart almost surgically, literally pulled apart from what looked like human hands. That made it his type of case.

His gun drawn, Levi continued to circle toward the center of the warehouse in a spiral pattern, but really it was like looking for a needle in a really dark and echo-y warehouse. There was a good chance that he was going to end up with his body ripped apart, this wasn't exactly something that being able to read a mind could help with. It was times like this that he wished he'd practiced more with his ability, maybe he'd be able to scan the area or something.

But he couldn't stop because it was scary or dangerous, because if he didn't stop whoever or whatever it was, more people would die, and he couldn't let that happen.

I pocketed my cell phone and stayed in the shadows of the dive, just inside the door as I waited for Valkyrie to come round up the little shit who had something bad on his mind.

Most people didn't drool quite this much when in a bar full of humans. And most humans couldn't survive what I was pretty sure a heartrate over 200.
